Irmaktan su tasiyan cocuklar dag yolunda bir ihtiyar adamin yattigini haber verdiler. Bir boz esek de, basibos, oralarda dolasiyordu. Husmen Hoca:

Uc koylu, arizali, camurlu bir patikadan agir agir, birbiri arkasindan cikiyorlardi; iclerinden biri, sakali bir at gibi, fena fena oksuruyordu.

Evvela boz merkebi gorduler. Fundalarin ortasinda, tozlu, toprakli bir yer bulmus, galiba bir cok tepinmis, yatmis, oynamis, simdi, memnun bir eda ile yan gelip oturuyor, batan gunesi kayitsizca seyrediyordu..." Boz Esek

"The children carrying water from the river brought the news that there was an old man lying on the mountain road. There was a gray donkey there, too, wandering about by himself. Husmen Hoca* said:

— Let's go and see.

It was near evening. A thick, pungent cloud rose from the ricefields and spread toward a swampy, malaria-infested hollow where two creeks united. From behind the split, charred trunks of five or ten old, lifeless willows, the sun extended a dim light that glinted here and there on the stagnant waters. These lighted patches looked like open stretches in a cloudy sky above the middle of a gray, damp plain. Slowly, they became cloudy and closed and were swallowed up.

Three villagers climbed up the broken, muddy footpath with difficulty, one behind the other. One of them coughed very heavily, like a horse with parasites.

First they saw the gray donkey. It was standing in the middle of the heath, in a dirty, dusty spot. No doubt it had been jumping about, rolling, and playing; now it was taking its ease with a pleased expres- sion, nonchalantly surveying the setting sun..."
