• Panathinaikos forward James Gist played for Fenerbahce during the 2011-12 campaign.
• Gist was a teammate of Fenerbahce players Bogdan Bogdanovic and Jan Vesely at Partizan Belgrade during the 2010-11 season. Gist was also a teammate of Fenerbahce big man Pero Antic with Lokmotiv Kuban Krasnodar during the 2009-10 campaign.
• Early in their respective careers, Fenerbahce big man Pero Antic and Panathinaikos center Ioannis Bourousis were teammates at AEK Athens for three seasons, from 2002 through 2005.
• Fenerbahce guard Kostas Sloukas was a teammate of Panathinaikos center Ioannis Bourousis with Olympiacos Piraeus for part of the 2009-10 season. The two also played together on the Greek national team on several occasions. Sloukas has also teamed with Panathinaikos players Nick Calathes and Antonis Fotsis in recent summers on the Greek national team.
• Kenny Gabriel was a teammate of Fenerbahce players Baris Hersek and Bobby Dixon at Pinar Karsiyaka during the 2014-15 season. They won the Turkish League title together.

The Take
Two of the top five defenses in the league will square off when the series between Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens and Fenerbahce Istanbul opens with Game 1 on Tuesday.
The game also pits eight-time EuroLeague winning coach, Fenerbahce’s Zeljko Obradovic, against the team he guided to five continental titles. Panathinaikos has never faced Obradovic in the playoffs before, and the coaching legend will be searching for his first win in Athens against his former club; he is 0-4 against Panathinaikos since taking over his current team.
Over the course of the season, Panathinaikos has allowed the third-fewest points (74.5 ppg.), a number Fenerbahce can essentially match (74.8 ppg.). It will be important for both teams to put a dent into the opposing defense, which each side has managed to do once this season already.
Panathinaikos beat Fenerbahce 81-70 in Round 12 in Athens, while Fenerbahce took an 84-63 win in their Round 18 encounter. One of the keys will certainly be the play of each team’s point guards. Mike James (12.9 ppg.) and Nick Calathes (10.1 ppg., 5.7 apg.) will try to get Panathinaikos going by scoring and getting others involved. Fenerbahce will rely on Bobby Dixon (11.3 ppg.) and Kostas Sloukas (10.2 ppg., 4.5 apg.) to get its offense moving, while Bogdan Bogdanovic (13.6 ppg., 3.9 apg.) will likely be the team’s top scoring option and Luigi Datome will get his share of looks.
All eyes, however, will be on the battles in the trenches where center Chris Singleton (12.3 ppg., 6 rpg., 1.3 spg., 1.1 bpg.) of Panathinaikos will go against the competitions’ top rebounder and shot blocker, Fenerbahce’s Ekpe Udoh (11.8 ppg., 7.7 rpg., 2.1 bpg.). Both will obviously be the focal points for their respective teams, but each squad does have tremendous, veteran depth inside, with big men Ioannis Bourousis and James Gist for the Greens and Jan Vesely and Pero Antić for Fenerbahce. The play of big men is expected not only to have a huge impact on Game 1, but on the entire series overall. With a pair of stellar defenses ready to go and so much at stake, points could be at a premium in the series opener where small details could very well determine the winner.
