"Insanlar bir mutlu yasam ozlemidir tutturmuslar. Oysa, asil mutlu yasama, olsem de bir, yasasam da dediginizde kavusuyorsunuz. Uzun bir sure sonra, nice bahtsizliklarla didistikten sonra variyorsunuz o yere. Ve saniyor musunuz ki, insanlar sizi orada rahat birakiyorlar? Hicbir zaman.Bu kayitsizlik cennetine vardiginiz anda, sizi oradan cekip cikariyorlar. Ulastiginiz cennetten cikip yeniden cehenneme donmek zorunda kaliyorsunuz. Tam dunyayi yok saydiginizda, o dunya gelip sizi kurtariyor...en azindan alay konusu yapmak icin." Gunaydin Geceyarisi

"People talk about the happy life, but that's the happy life when you don't care any longer if you live or die. You only get there after a long time and many misfortunes. And do you think you are left there? Never. As soon as you have reached this heaven of indifference, you are pulled out of it. From your heaven you have to go back to hell. When you are dead to the world, the world often rescues you, if only to make a figure of fun out of you."

Amerikali yazar, editor, tarihci, sair ve edebi elestirmen Malcolm Cowley’in dogum yildonumu (24 Agustos 1898)
“ ‘Guney’i anlat bana,’ der Quentin Compson’un Harvard’daki oda arkadasi Shreve McCannon adli Kanadali. Ohio’nun gerisindeki bilinmeyen bolgeyi merak etmektedir. ‘Nasildir orasi?’ diye sorar. ‘Ne yaparlar? Nicin yasarlar orada? Ne yasatir onlari?’
Ve temeli biraz Faulkner’i andiran, bazen onun yerine konusuyormus gibi gorunen Quentin cevap verir, ‘Anlayamazsin sen. Orada dogmus olman gerek.’ ”

“Quentin Compson and his roommate in curious about the unknown region beyond the Ohio River, Shreve McCannon, Quentin’s Canadian-born roommate at Harvard, asks the Mississippi native to ‘Tell about the South. What’s it like there?’ he asks. ‘What do they do there? Where do they live there? Why do they live at all?’
And Quentin, whose background likens to Faulkner’s, answers, ‘You can’t understand it. You would have to be born there.’ Nevertheless, he tells a long and violent story that says reveals something essential in the history of the Deep South—which is not so much a region as it is, in Quentin’s mind, an incomplete and frustrated nation trying to relive its legendary past.”
