Ingiliz yazar Daniel Defoe’ya gore Robinson Crusoe’nun gemisi 30 Eylul 1659’da batti.

“30 Eylul 1659, Ben, zavalli, bahtsiz Robinson Crusoe, acik denizde, korkunc bir firtinada batan gemiden Umutsuzluk Adasi adini verdigim bu kasvetli, talihsiz adaya suruklendim. Gemidekilerin hepsi oldu, ben de az kalsin oluyordum.

Gunun kalan kismini dustugum bu berbat duruma uzulup SIKILMAKLA gecirdim. Ne yiyecek bir seyim, evim, giyecegim, silahim ne de siginacak bir yerim vardi. Hicbir kurtulus umudum yoktu.Beni bekleyen tek sey olumdu. Ya yirtici hayvanlara yem olacak, ya vahsiler tarafindan oldurulecek, ya da acliktan olecektim. Karanlik basinca, vahsi hayvan korkusundan bir agacta uyudum. Butun gece yagmur yagmasina ragmen deliksiz bir uyku cektim.”



“September 30, 1659. I poor miserable Robinson Crusoe, being shipwreck'd, during a dreadful Storm, in the offing, came on Shore on this dismal unfortunate Island, which I call'd the Island of Despair, all the rest of the Ship's Company being drown'd, and my self almost dead.

All the rest of that Day I spent in afflicting my self at the dismal Circumstances I was brought to, viz. I had neither Food, House, Clothes, Weapon, or Place to fly to, and in Despair of any Relief, saw nothing but Death before me, either that I should be devour'd by wild Beasts, murther'd by Savages, or starv'd to Death for Want of Food. At the Approach of Night, I slept in a Tree for fear of wild Creatures, but slept soundly tho' it rain'd all Night.”



“30 settembre 1659. Io povero miserabile Robinson Crusoe naufragato, durante una spaventosa burrasca, dall’impeto delle onde fui gettato a terra in una orribile e sfortunata isola che chiamai l’Isola della disperazione. Gli altri miei compagni del vascello rimasero annegati, io poco meno che morto.

Passai tutto il rimanente della giornata nei disperarmi su le tremende condizioni a cui mi vidi ridotto, perchè io non aveva nè cibo, nè casa, nè panni per cambiarmi, nè luogo ove rifuggirmi. In quella disperazione d’ogni soccorso io non vedeva se non la morte dinanzi a me, o rimanessi divorato dalle fiere o trucidato dai selvaggi, o perissi di fame per mancanza di nutrimento. Al sopraggiugnere della notte dormii sopra un albero per la paura di essere sorpreso da esseri malefici, fossero uomini selvaggi, fossero belve; pure dormii profondamente, benchè piovesse tutta la notte.”
