Deutsche Bank Vet Launchs App to Bring Wall Street to Retail Investors

Kerim Derhalli, a former Deutsche Bank AGDBK.XE -0.76% executive whose Wall Street career spanned three decades, is looking to deliver one of traders’ most prized possessions to retail investors.

Mr. Derhalli is launching Wednesday a new iPhone app called Invstr, which provides financial news, market data, research and messaging functions. Invstr says it aims to release an Android version of its app soon.

If this sounds a lot like the array of services traders at banks and money managers pay Bloomberg LP some $20,000 a year to use, then you get the idea behind Invstr.

“Bloomberg terminals are super-expensive, and people, in general, don’t have access to the information they need to make informed investment decisions,” said Mr. Derhalli, who headed Deutsche Bank’s equity-trading business before founding Invstr in February 2013. “The first focus was to democratize information and make it available to everyone.”

The Invstr app is free, though users are required to pay for some of its services. Accessing a research report may cost you $4.99, while market commentaries are 5 cents each. Want real-time data on stock or bond prices? It’s 1 cent, per security, per day.

Mr. Derhalli says he launched London-based Invstr with his own money and another passive investor. A beta version of the app has been available in Europe since August.

While Invstr’s primary focus is on the individual investor, Mr. Derhalli says he’s held discussions with a number of banks to customize the app for their employees’ needs.
