"Ich bin unruhig und giftig. Gestern vor dem Einschlafen hatte ich links oben im Kopf ein flackerndes kühles Flämmchen. Über meinem linken Auge hat sich eine Spannung schon eingebürgert. Denke ich daran so scheint es mir, daß ich es im Bureau auch dann nicht aushalten könnte, wenn man mir sagte, daß ich in einem Monat frei sein werde. Und doch tue ich im Bureau meist meine Pflicht, bin recht ruhig, wenn ich der Zufriedenheit meines Chefs sicher sein kann und empfinde meinen Zustand nicht als einen schrecklichen. Gestern abend habe ich mich übrigens mit Absicht dumpf gemacht, war spazieren, habe Dickens gelesen, war dann etwas gesünder und hatte die Kraft zu der Traurigkeit verloren, die ich als berechtigt ansah, wenn sie mir auch etwas in die Ferne gerückt schien, wovon ich mir einen bessern Schlaf erhoffte. Er war auch ein wenig tiefer, aber nicht genug und oft unterbrochen. Ich sagte mir zum Trost, daß ich zwar die große Bewegung, die in mir gewesen war, wieder unterdrückt hatte, daß ich mich aber nicht aus der Hand geben wollte, wie früher immer nach solchen Zeiten, sondern daß ich mir auch der Nachwehen jener Bewegung genau bewußt bleiben wolle, was ich früher nie getan hatte. Vielleicht könnte ich so eine verborgene Standhaftigkeit in mir finden..."
