''The outbreak of novel Coronavirus in China is a common treat for all airlines, which may potentially weigh down on the passenger demand – measured by the RPKs. While the impact of the epidemic on global GDP and the aviation demand remains uncertain at this stage, an analysis of IATA demonstrates how previous epidemics had affected the passenger demand. Accordingly, the impact of SARS in May 2003 had been the worst, compared with the avian flu outbreaks in 2005 and 2013 as well as the outbreak of MERS in 2005. At the height of SARS outbreak, monthly RPKs of Asia-Pacific airlines were c.35% lower than their precrises levels. It took 9 months for the monthly international traffic to return back to its pre-crises levels and Asia-Pacific airlines lost 8% of their annual RPKs''.
