"Yalnizca Almanca konusur. Bildigi tek yabanci sozcugun Ingilizcedeki gentleman olmasi hepimize cok hos geliyor. Baska insanlarin egitimli olmasina saygi duyar. Buyuk Frederick’ten beri bu kadar entelektuel bir liderimiz olmamisti. Mussolini’nin farkli diller konusabilmesine, edebi yetenegine, orgutleme dehasina, zafer resmi gecitleri ve eski Romali onur konularindaki klasik tutkusuna gipta eder.

Mizah anlayisi nefis. Bir keresinde, saci bozulmasin diye basina bir havaci basligi takmis. Mercedes’iyle giderken, hiz sinirini sadece birkac mille asmis ve motosikleti bir polis tarafindan yolun kenarina cekilmisti.

- Beni izleyin, dedi polis, bir sonraki kasabanin hakimi gerekli islemleri yapacak.

- Izle, dedi sofor onbasisina. Havaci basligi yuzunden polis Mercedes’te kimin oldugunu anlamamsti, ama hakimin muhafizi binaya kimin girmekte oldugunu gorup selam durdu, hakim de selam durunca herkes donup kaldi.

- Surat yuzunden tutuklandim, dedi, saskinliktan agzini balik gibi acip kapayan hakime. Kendisini biraz toparladiginda hakim, hata gibisinden bir sozcuk fisildadi.

"He speaks German only. We all find it charming that the only alien wordhe knows is the English wordgentleman. He respects learning in others. Not since Frederick the Great have we had so intellectual a leader. He admires Mussolini his gift of languages, his literary talent, his organizational genius,his classical flair for triumphal parades and ancient Roman dignity.

His sense of humor is delicious. Once, out driving in his Mercedes, wear-ing an aviator cap to keep his hair in place, he exceeded the speed limit by afew miles only and was haled to the shoulder by a motorcycle policeman.

- Follow me, the policeman said, to the Magistrate's in the next town- ship, where you will catch it.

-Follow him, he instructed his chauffeur corporal.The policeman, you see, did not recognize who was in the Mercedes, because of the aviator cap, but the guard at the Magistrate's saw who was en-tering the building, and gave a salute, and the Magistrate gave a salute, andeveryone froze.

- I have been arrested for speeding, he said to the Magistrate, who opened his mouth like a fish, struck dumb. When capable of it, the Magis-trate whispered a word that sounded like mistake.

-Not a bit of it, he said. We were well over the limit, and whereas I wasnot heeding the speedometer, I will not blame my chauffeur corporal but when Germany took her place foremost among the nations. Germany above all."

Iyice goruyorum, kosnulu pervaneler
kokuyla ve gunes aydinligiyla kocaman
daliyorlar tehlikeli caliliklarin icine
ya da gelip duran golgelerini dusuruyorlar
yillardan bir yil, dort basi mamur tanrilar
ayaklarini koysunlar diye,

And me happiest when I compose poems.
Love, power, the huzza of battle
Are something, are much;
yet a poem includes them like a pool
water and reflection.
In me, nature’s divided things—
tree, mould on tree—
have their fruition;
I am their core. Let them swap,
bandy, like a flame swerve
I am their mouth; as a mouth I serve.

And I observe how the sensual moths
big with odour and sunshine
dart into the perilous shrubbery;
or drop their visiting shadows
upon the garden I one year made
of flowering stone to be a footstool
for the perfect gods:
who, friends to the ascending orders,
sustain all passionate meditations
and call down pardons
for the insurgent blood.

A quiet madman, never far from tears,
I lie like a slain thing
under the green air the trees
inhabit, or rest upon a chair
towards which the inflammable air
tumbles on many robins’ wings;
noting how seasonably
leaf and blossom uncurl
and living things arrange their death,
while someone from afar off
blows birthday candles for the world.

Her golf clubs were in the hall; in a few minutes, Eilis knew, someone would call for her and her sister would not return until the summer evening had faded."

"Karl bir koltukta oturmus, isiklandirilmis akvaryuma bakiyordu. Basgarson yanina gelerek gecen yil akvaryumda yasanan korkunc felaketten bahsetti. Doga asigi birisi birkac mavi Cambium baligi getirmis ve onlari oteki baliklarin yanina koymasi icin otel sahibini ikna etmisti. Otel sahibi bu mavi baliklar konusunda biraz ikirciklenmis ama sonunda kabul etmisti. Ilk birkac gun mavi Cambium baliklari suda neseyle oynasmislar ama bir gece, aniden saldirip oteki baliklari korkunc bir sekilde katletmislerdi. Sabaha akvaryumun dibi ceset doluydu. 'Peki bunlar da katillerin torunlari mi?' diye sordu Karl. 'Hayir. Otel sahibi katillere olum cezasi verdi.' 'Oyleyse, bunlar baska baliklar mi?' 'Evet, yenileri. Onlara cok duskunum. Bak suda ne muhtesem suzuluyorlar. Sizce de harika degiller mi?' Karl 'Kendi aralarinda baris icinde yasiyorlar mi?' diye sordu. 'Sanirim,' dedi basgarson. 'Yesil olanlar cok mutevazi ve kendi hallerindeler, hic de kavgaci degiller.' 'Onlari ayirmak gerekmiyor mu?' Basgarson, 'Belki gerekiyordur,' dedi."



"Karl sat in an armchair and looked at the illuminated **uarium. The headwaiter approached and told him about the terrible catastrophe that had taken place in the **uarium the year before. A nature lover had brought some blue Cambium fishes and persuaded the hotel owner to put them in with the other fish. The hotel owner was a little apprehensive about these blue fish, but in the end he agreed. For the first few days the blue Cambium fish disported themselves gaily in the water, but one night they suddenly fell on the other fish and massacred them horribly. In the morning the floor of the **uarium was full of corpses. 'And are these the descendants of the murderers?' asked Karl. 'No. The hotel owner sentenced the murderers to death.' 'So these are other fishes then?' 'Yes, new ones. I'm very fond of them. Look how grandly they sweep through the water. There's something magnificent about them, don't you think?' 'Do they live in peace among themselves?' asked Karl. 'I think so,' said the headwaiter. 'The green ones are very modest and retiring, not at all belligerent.' 'Don't you think they should be separated?' 'Perhaps they should,' said the headwaiter."

Yasadigindan bile emin degildi, bir olu gibi yasiyordu cunku. Bense ellerim bombos bir adam olarak gorunuyordum, ama kendimden emindim, her seyden emindim, hem ondan cok daha emindim. Yasadigimdan emindim ve gelmekte olan olumden emindim. Evet, bundan baska bir seyim yoktu benim. Ama, hic degilse bu gercege, onun bana sahip oldugu kadar sahiptim." Yabanci
